1. Glencoe Spanish 1, Bienvenidos.

2. Work Book pages

II. Course Description

This course is based on the standards of American Council Teaching Foreign Language Education (ACTFL); it aims to develop all four-language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The goal of the course is to help students develop the ability to communicate in Spanish, while at the same time introducing them to the Hispanic culture. A strong emphasis is placed on using the language in practical situations, while also helping the student to grasp the basics of Spanish grammar, syntax (sentence formation), and morphology (word formation).

Please keep in mind that Spanish classes are designed to present the basic tools necessary for learning Spanish. Students do not automatically become either fluent or proficient by completing this program as language acquisition must occur outside of the classroom.

III. Course Objectives:

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

1. Understand the main idea and most of the supporting details of spoken Spanish on topics related to their daily life.

2. Speak in complete sentences in Spanish about familiar topics.

3. Read simple narrative or expository material on cultural topics with an understanding of the main idea and most of the supporting details.

4. Write a short, coherent composition of two to three paragraphs on a familiar topic with sufficient accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

5. Understand significant cultural traits of the Spanish-speaking world (customs, lifestyles, attitudes, geography, famous people) so as to be able to function appropriately in typical social situations.

IV. Course Requirements/Policies

Participation:

Each class period you will earn up to ten points for participation.  Full participation means that you are on time and ready to learn. Students are required to be in their classes from bell to bell. You must turn your homework at the beginning of class. You also need to bring writing utensils, and you must actively listen and volunteer comments.

Academic Honesty: I expect all of your assignments to be your own. If anyone has attempted to represent another’s work as his/her own, that student will receive an ‘f’ for the assignment, and parents and administration will be notified. For a second offense, serious administrative consequences will result.

Attendance

If a student misses 10 or more classes of any given class, they lose credit for the class.

After 5 absences in any class a student will have their grade lowered by one letter grade.

Tardy Policy

If students arrive after the second bell (5 minutes) they are tardy.

If students are more than 15 minutes late, I will mark then absent.

8 tardies in one class per semester will have their grade lowered by one letter grade.
